Addiction –

image

I never thought in a million years that I would become a Drug and Alcohol Case Manager – It is a field that you MUST care whole heartedly about the people in addiction. If not – it will NOT work for you and it will surely hinder the people that you are supposed to be helping in the long run!

Although many people struggle with addiction in their lives, not all of them are able to overcome it. Your chances of being successful in becoming healthy and making a full recovery depend on many things, including how driven you are to succeed and live a healthier and better life overall. Having support is definitely one of the most important things that can either make or break a person when it comes to trying to beat addiction. Those who have family and friends that support them through their initial recovery period tend to do much better than those who do not have anyone to be there for them.  I ALWAYS tell my them that in order to avoid a relapse you will want to let everyone who you are close to know about what you are going through so they will be able to help you in any way possible.

Addiction can be tough, which is why you will need to have an action plan that details exactly how you are going to go about overcoming your problems. If you are addicted to drugs for example, detox will not be enough to free you of the stranglehold that they have on you. There is definitely a physical aspect to addiction, but a lot of it is also psychological. Be sure to come up with multiple ways to stay healthy, because it really is a day-to-day process. There is no single miracle cure that will be able to help you overcome your addiction overnight.

Drug courts and mentors and case managers like myself really try our best to help addicts / alcoholics succeed in recovery. However, there are two critical pieces to unraveling the cycles of addiction and therefore to preventing recidivism. Why? Because addiction is a chronic, but treatable, brain disease.
image

If addiction is left untreated (and treatment is far more complicated than just stopping drinking or using the substance), the individual with the disease is very likely to relapse after their release from jail, and very likely their relapse will lead to more criminal behavior. Not only that, but treatment of this brain disease requires long-term continuing care to insure the necessary re-wiring (healthy brain changes) and trigger prevention tools are in place that will allow an individual to succeed in their recovery.

Many crimes are committed by addicts/alcoholics because of the characteristics of the disease of addiction, namely: cravings, loss of control, tolerance and physical dependence. It is the “insanity” of the brain disease of addiction that causes them to do bad and/or illegal things, like stealing and what this “insanity “is about).

Drug courts provides an alternative to jail or prison time by going after the root of the person’s problem — the reason he/she committed the crime — their addiction (whether that be an addiction to drugs or alcohol). Drug court helps a person get and stay clean and sober and if that person succeeds in drug court, they avoid jail or prison time and a record. Last but not least, people who are involved in addiction need pray and help and it takes a great deal of services from the community, government agencies, support from family and friends to help KEEP THEM SOBER –

Counseling –

image

I really had a great day today while at work – sounds weird huh!! It is not like I am working my DREAM JOB and loving it! LOL ……….However, there are perks that I do get “emotionally and spiritually” behind it.

Being a drug and alcohol counselor for almost 3 years has really given me a VERY different perspective on life…. dealing with their battles of depression and a long list of mental health issues or what I prefer to call “situations” is a task that you have to really CARE about instead of looking at it as a job.

Dealing with people who are apart of AA ( Alcohol Anonymous ) vs people who are apart of NA ( Narcotics Anonymous ) I would consider different – same “meeting concept” but different demons –

My OLD mindset was just in a black and white version of people who suffered in their addictive states…. It has its rewards but more often there is failure. Many patients are court-ordered and present problems and not seeking treatment. Many believe they don’t have a problem and are trying to beat the system. The money isn’t very good ( to my standards based on how much I give of MYSELF )………………but I do it to afford those who are serious about recovery the opportunity to learn about it in a safe environment…

Being honest… “at this moment”…….My rewards aren’t in money but in seeing people change the way they live despite having an incurable, and often fatal, condition. Sadly, more people die than live….

Nonetheless, where I work is a faith-based program and having the ability to have God “in the mix” does help!

Parenting

Sooo Inappropriate for a 12 yr old –

I can see it now….. I am NOT speaking as if I would want a 12-year-old little girl to go down the wrong path but….seriously the lyrics of this girl’s song and the company that she is keeping in the video, as well as how she is dressed, the piercings, tattoos etc… I get allowing your children to “start the process’ of discovering who they are…. but this is like Baby, DO YOU! However, I see her mom Jada Pinkett Smith when I see Willow –

Hey, do not take MY WORD for it – view the video yourself…..

Yes!!!! Everyone does parent differently and come from different backgrounds..however, if she is permitted to “discover herself ” too early what will she be like when she turns 16? By the way, that is STILL young too!

QUESTION – Why is a 12 year old child singing about a summer fling? What would they know about the word fling? uuggghh..

I unfortunately also see a little Rhianna MIXED with Lady Gaga transforming before my very eyes….. Well, sex early..drugs….scandal..tabloids..GET READY because for her to be 12 years old and already experiencing so many things as well as a overly spoiled HOLLYWOOD child…things dont look to good.

Tried Something Different –

I wanted to start going to see movies that I normally WOULD NOT be interested in going to….. BUT yesterday I went to see G.I. Joe and today I went to see Temptation. I love The Rock ( Duane Johnson ) and even as a child, I loved G.I. Joe but I am not a fan sometimes of how they are over sensationalized my childhood cartoons and making them into movies…. I did not like the last G.I. film but this one made MORE SENSE and felt more real ( besides the PRESIDENT being able to change into someone else – it reminded me of the girl who played in The Wolverine movie. ( charlize Theron – played that blue character! LOL )

Okay next…..Wow…..is all that I can say… first let me deal with the Tyler Perry flick called Temptation….

PLEASE let the record show, I feel that  I am not a HUGE Tyler Perry fan and I feel it is because MADEA was played and forced down my throat by way of film and media it made me SICK OF HIM…. Of course, he could care less what I felt but at this point for me to support him….he must CONTINUE to do films like Good Deeds ( amazing ) A Family That Preys ( he should have made a movie like this after the 2nd Madea film ) Why Did I Get Married 1 and 2 ( real life and didn’t feel staged ) and then this movie Temptation …..

I do not watch all black casts movies because MOST ……or at least the ones that I have given a chance BEFORE Tyler Perry started producing movies ALL ended up with the black man getting shot, being disrespectful to women, a thug, a thief, a drug dealer or had AT LEAST 12 baby mammas! The women always slept with AT LEAST 12 different men, held drugs for boyfriends, were the mistress, lacked education, spoke so slang it hurt my ears..etc..etc..etc..

image

So to be HONEST…….. with Tyler Perry having the God – given ability to make movies with all black casts with the film being POSITIVE, FAITH FILLED AND A MESSAGE all included??!!!$%$%$%$ WOW… KUDDOS to him for real or any producer who can do that, regardless if they are black or white.

So umm.. yeah that is why I do not support all black films… I am a black women with 4 degrees, a single parent with a kid who has been on high honor roll ever since his feet touched the school grounds, he plays two instruments, plays tennis, basketball, baseball and soccer, loves to read and speaks with intelligence!

I do not see an example of MYSELF or MY SON in any of these films so why should I support them in ANY WAY? Dont worry because I am not…. but for this movie called Temptation – it was worth the 2 hours.

Morning Glory –

Being able to wake up in my right mind, God in my life, Love in my heart, having the use of all of my limbs and motor skills, a roof over my head, transportation to get around, a family that is SOMEWHAT in tact ” to whatever degree” …. my momma doing very well, financially better and a desire to be a better person is MORNING GLORY to me…

Even taking away transportation – I still have MORNING GLORY. The little things have always been my big things and even more so now. Just thinking of how many people are trying to just mentally wrap their minds around what transpired over the last few days via Hurricane Sandy is baffling.

I have NOT complained about a single things since the storm hit the states of New York, New Jersey, Delaware, West Virginia and Pennsylvania. LIFE is precious and it is amazing of the tiny things that we constantly take for granted.  Lord send HELP to those areas…

random thought on addicts and faith

Faith to a Christian ………. is what Drugs are to an  Addict…..They BOTH feel that it is a MUST for them…… typing on my phone when I blog is very challenging  so please excuse ANY typos! I just have to get these thoughts out of my head and released somewhere else! LOL

Anyway… back to addicts and Christians…..They BOTH need it (whatever their it is)  to function… They need it to obtain a better perspective…They need it because it gives them a sense of power…

Even though the “urge” that the believer and the drug addict may feel some of the same tendencies to maintain what they need to “keep them going” …….Faith does not harm you it helps…. Faith can cause you to lose things and gain things….but the final attributes will leave you on the winning side… Even the sinner knows that only things that are done in the name of God will last…

To establish strong faith you must ……MUST work on your personal relationship with God.. there is NO way around it… FAITH increases your life worth and Drugs decreases your life worth…. However…the SAD thing about the difference between a drug addict and a follower of Jesus is that ….  the drug addict will go to the ends of the earth to get that high…that fix etc.. but a great deal of Christians will not go as far as to their knees to get what they are in need of…. Christians need to crave Christ like Addicts crave drugs….they will DO ANYTHING to keep it apart of their daily living…….

Our relationship with God is similar to our relationship with others in that all relationships require faith. We can never fully know any other person. We cannot experience all they experience nor enter into their minds to know what their thoughts and emotions are. Proverbs 14:10 says, “The heart knows its own bitterness, and a stranger does not share its joy.” We are incapable of even knowing our own hearts fully. Jeremiah 17:9 says that the human heart is wicked and deceptive, “Who can know it?” In other words, the human heart is such that it seeks to hide the depth of its wickedness, deceiving even its owner. We do this through shifting blame, justifying wrong behavior, minimizing our sins, etc.

However in the END the real difference between drugs and FAITH is:  that one is a FANTASY and the other one is REALITY…….

So why settle for something that is soo temporary and can cost you to lose out on EVERYTHING in life?
