A Female “Jim Crow”……

pastor makeda pennycooke via facebook

This story has LITERALLY floored me this evening…. I mean really? Some black folk kill me with their LACK of respect of their own identity – It is a SAD DAY in America with it being 2013 and this JIM CROW Black Woman acting like this!

An African North Carolina pastor is facing backlash after she requested “only  white people” work as greeters at the church she leads. This woman has a smile on her face but her mind and intentions toward her own race CLEARLY says something different.

In an email, Pastor Makeda Pennycooke of Freedom House in Charlotte said  “first impressions matter,” and the church wants “the best of the best on the  front doors.”

“We anticipate having an increase in the number of people visiting and  attending Freedom House over the next few weeks,” she wrote. “We are continuing to work to bring our racial  demographic pendulum back to mid-line, so we would like to ask that only white  people be on the front doors.”

The church said the pastor apologized, and released a full statement that  said Pennycooke was writing because “the greeting team was no longer reflecting  the racial diversity of our entire congregation.”

“She made an error in judgment in requesting all white greeters at the front  door, going overboard in placing emphasis on any one race over another in trying  to highlight diversity within the greeting team,” the statement continued. “She  admits this was a grave lapse in judgment and is sincerely sorry for her  actions.”

I bet this AFRICAN AMERICAN PASTOR ….had a POOR lapse in judgement but I do NOT feel that she is sorry – She is sorry that the members of her church told the media about!

Never thought I would see a BLACK …Jim Crow ..ESPECIALLY in the “form of” a Pastor! This country is full of surprises!

Ministry Burn – Out……

image

In ministry, anyone can get burned out when they are doing maybe a bit too much. I know that I am NOT the only one who has experienced this at all. You desire to do the will and the work of the Lord Jesus Christ and of course be a blessing to your local assembly. Being a leader takes WORK and most of the time after you are ALREADY in it full throttle…..you do not understand how much can be required of you…….

Leadership as well as the working pew members have moments when they just simply need A BREAK! Working in ministry is EITHER a full – time or a part – time job PERIOD! It takes a great deal of work, time, patience, energy and finances regardless what position you hold in your local assembly. Furthermore, if you also work outside your local church assembly – everything via your schedule gets amplified even higher.

But pastors are particularly susceptible to it because it is their job to understand life and to explain it to people. Week after week pastors stand in front of crowds explaining how the bible impacts life. But his words ring very hollow – empty – pointless when he feels as though nothing he says matters or makes a real difference. After a while he realizes that his preaching only calls for a little more morality, a little more bible study, and a little more love. His teaching doesn’t transform people’s lives – at least not in ways that really matter.

A pastor with ministry burnout feels like he’s on a treadmill or like he’s beating his head against a wall. He is very involved in a lot of ministry activities. But his efforts don’t accomplish much. He longs to be involved in genuine ministry but finds that the work he does often takes him further away from the ministry he is most passionate about.

I refer to the position of pastors as being a male but there of course are female pastors as well and over the last 10 years, there has been almost like a SPIRITUAL UPRISING in the church with women pastors. I also feel that this is the case because a great deal of men are “NOT in position” as being the head as God instructed them to be in.

Clergy burnout occurs when a pastor sees that the work he is doing isn’t accomplishing the results he intends. Even more frustrating, he doesn’t know how to do ministry any other way, which leads to feelings of inadequacy or failure.

People place to many expectations on pastors and their wives, and forget they are human beings. The first family is not always the perfect family we have our share of problems to, and we need genuine Christ Love just like you expect it for yourselves. What has happened to compassion and understanding?

We all need to understand the importance of re-grouping to obtain that SECOND WIND that only God can give so we can continue this race for Christ’s sake……. to God be the glory…..

Bishop Timothy Williams – How I Remember Him

1

I woke up today STILL thinking of this past weekend and the Funeral / Home – Going Service Celebration of my FIRST male example in ministry. Pastor Tim was a pastor that loves – not because God is in his heart but because he is in the heart of God.

His thoughts, actions and messages to the congregation always come from the heart of God. He was a great man that really is driven by his passion for God and his vision for God’s vision. Pastor Tim worked tirelessly in ministry and I have never seen him give any less prayer, time and energy to someone else’s vision than he did to his own. Even though he was a pastor, he was an extraordinary servant and an even more exemplary as a worshipper. He consistently encouraged us to become worshippers of God more than anything, regardless of our age.

He was concerned about the whole person and his lifestyle is one that can be mimicked in the church, at home or at work. He was a proud husband and father and goes to great lengths to protect his family sometimes praying over them all night long. Always instructing them in how to hear God; draw near to God; honor God; give God all!

He was especially special to me on a personal note because he trained my mother to a place in God where I was actually able to see who God really was and what He can do.  She was MY EXAMPLE because he became HER EXAMPLE.

Everyone who walked into the doors of Christian Temple was actually able  to start fresh in the kingdom. It was life changing for me. And that’s what Pastor Tim did for many of us–change lives!

Pastor Tim was a father figure to many and I will deeply miss him….

Relationships

My Son and His Glad Heart!

image

My son and this man has always shared a special bond….. It is so imperative that men REGARDLESS of what age, have male role models, male mentors, male inspired people in their lives……

Being able to share priceless moments is a blessing and my son appreciates all the male mentors in his life. Besides another male mentor that is in his life, no one can bring a smile to his face like this man.

We actually even talked about no matter what community event or church function we are at and he sees him, he becomes ax excited young man. I told him that I know he indeed loves his father, but he does NOT SMILE, GIGGLE, CHUCKLE, GET EXCITED the same way when he is with his father v.s. this man.

My son met him about 5 -6 years ago and he loved him from day one and my son said to me today that he can tell that he has a good relationship with God. I said yes baby, he is special and has a great deal of characteristics that people just don’t see nor experience anymore from men in ministry.

He said he wish that his father had the same type of Jesus on him!!!! I tried MY BEST to keep my facial expressions together but inside I did know AND UNDERSTAND what my son was speaking about. It is not always about how much time a person spends with my son rather than the impact of what is done for him in the time is spent with him.

Of course I never have or ever will speak harshly about his father to him but kids ARE VERY HONEST about their feelings!! What they see as well as what they feel!!! My son is an Old Soul anyway…

Anyway, this Pastor / Bishop is a very nice……kind ….caring man of God who engages my son’s mind, soul and spirit and I am grateful that their connection was tactfully started years ago and is still very magnetic to my son from the moment he sees him.

This Bishop surely loves people and has a heart for REAL MINISTRY and he carries the scent of compassion that it’s soooooooooooo contagious!!!

Parenting

Lord….Anoint My Hands!

Had to go to my friend’s church so he could let me LAY on his B3 Hammond Organ and ANOINT ME AND MY FINGERS in his church pulpit! LOL The pastor of course is trying to teach me but I seem to be able to play by ear which is what I DO NOT WANT TO DO. Good musicians play ” by ear ” but GREAT musicians can READ music and WRITE notes! My son has a ” GOOD EAR ” for musical notes and will play a beat after he hears it and trust me!!! We have gone through so many instruments that it is driving me BONKERS…

He did the drums for almost 2 years and then he got tired of it and wanted something DIFFERENT – So he jumped onto the guitar and that did not last too long then he wanted the clarinet and that did not last too long…. then he asked about the TUBA!! Like boy are you serious…. ME OR YOU will not be DRAGGING that huge thing around…..

Geeesh… then he “stumbled upon” the percussion instruments and had an intrest with them and I IMMEDIATELY told him to try out the trumpet. I thought about my brother Dee who used to play and he was good… I recall being at church and listening AND watching his friends Peter….Keith and Spencer just play for HOURS…… and them boys never seemed to look or even get tired!

Well anyway…my son OF COURSE in this area did not listen to his mom and he went for the Tenor Sax which I said ok…. I played some youtube videos of Kenny G and other artists and he said that the Tenor Sax would be his instrument for the next2 years….

Well can ANYONE tell me why he is currently banging on the drums as I am blogging this? I thought we were done with the drums?… Ugghhh – back to his “PICK OF INSTRUMENTS” FOR THE MONTH – LOL

He now wants to do the sax and the trumpet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whew, I fussed at this boy so much……so loud and so long that he ALMOST said okay mom, never mind about the trumpet. Now I am ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL for my son being creative and desiring to participate in almost anything but he has to pick and stick!!!!  I told him that he could pick two instruments and he said that he wanted to do the saxophone, the trumpet AND drums?

I guess he cant count today-

Miss Him –

He surely has blessed my life over the years…. I recall driving to Youngstown, Ohio with a group of my friends just to see him. Sitting in the office with him laughing and crackign jokes QUICKLY turned into a super duper deep in depth conversation about God.

I will never forget him – You never forget when A TRUE MAN OF GOD – lays hands on you!

Bishop Norman L. Wagner – ” Thank you” for being such an example….
