Kids and Music

My son will be playing the bass, the baratone sax as well as his tenor saxophone this year! The tenor saxophone is in the middle …. When my son was telling me that he would be playing all THREE, I got a tad bit nervous – but looking at the baritone saxophone does not seem to be a big deal or much difference.  The mouthpieces / horns is the difference –

However, the bass will be something different and it is funny because he always wanted to play the cello! LOL – So go figure…… This year will be VERY different because his activities will indeed make us both stretch ourselves…….

The BEST thing about my son not only PLAYING instruments is that he indeed can READ ‘sheet music” a great deal of people can play because they have an “ear to hear” which he does as well – but he has the capability to do BOTH!

He will be joining the chess club again and the bowling team – along with his usual and YEAR ROUND – baseball….basketball and soccer – Busy..Busy..Busy…..

Lord….Anoint My Hands!

Had to go to my friend’s church so he could let me LAY on his B3 Hammond Organ and ANOINT ME AND MY FINGERS in his church pulpit! LOL The pastor of course is trying to teach me but I seem to be able to play by ear which is what I DO NOT WANT TO DO. Good musicians play ” by ear ” but GREAT musicians can READ music and WRITE notes! My son has a ” GOOD EAR ” for musical notes and will play a beat after he hears it and trust me!!! We have gone through so many instruments that it is driving me BONKERS…

He did the drums for almost 2 years and then he got tired of it and wanted something DIFFERENT – So he jumped onto the guitar and that did not last too long then he wanted the clarinet and that did not last too long…. then he asked about the TUBA!! Like boy are you serious…. ME OR YOU will not be DRAGGING that huge thing around…..

Geeesh… then he “stumbled upon” the percussion instruments and had an intrest with them and I IMMEDIATELY told him to try out the trumpet. I thought about my brother Dee who used to play and he was good… I recall being at church and listening AND watching his friends Peter….Keith and Spencer just play for HOURS…… and them boys never seemed to look or even get tired!

Well anyway…my son OF COURSE in this area did not listen to his mom and he went for the Tenor Sax which I said ok…. I played some youtube videos of Kenny G and other artists and he said that the Tenor Sax would be his instrument for the next2 years….

Well can ANYONE tell me why he is currently banging on the drums as I am blogging this? I thought we were done with the drums?… Ugghhh – back to his “PICK OF INSTRUMENTS” FOR THE MONTH – LOL

He now wants to do the sax and the trumpet!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Whew, I fussed at this boy so much……so loud and so long that he ALMOST said okay mom, never mind about the trumpet. Now I am ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL for my son being creative and desiring to participate in almost anything but he has to pick and stick!!!!  I told him that he could pick two instruments and he said that he wanted to do the saxophone, the trumpet AND drums?

I guess he cant count today-

PT Conference, Here I Come!

On my way to pick up my baby to head to his little 5th grade Parent / Teacher Conference…. Please let EVERYTHING be of a good report! He has been blessed to have been on Honor Roll since he has been in Pre – K.

Well, Math is something he is very good in and I would have to give that gene credit to his father….. He aces math like its nobody’s business! I think math is ” alright ” I guess…. However, I think that my son’s father may have been just a little gifted in math which has made my homework time with my son EASY………Thank goodness.

Wish me well and if all goes welll, this conference should be a fly by night meeting that last no longer than 30 minutes AT TOPS!

Drum roll PLEASE……….

Welp…. my baby is going to yet another camp for the summer and he is excited AND SO AM I!!! This is the first year that he has been to so many camps but it has been good for both of us…. Alone time for myself and he started feeling more independent….. The only thing he stated was …Mom just dont leave me at a camp for more than 2 weeks! LOL Which I would never do…. because I already know that we BOTH would miss one another way too much!

Sending my son to camp during the summer provides him with chances to expand  his skills, make friends and experience unusual opportunities.

I swear to goodness that I SO LOVE AND ENJOY being a parent to this little boy! He has his days of course but so do I!! LOL This has been a challenging 2012 for us both and we have managed to get through it.. thank you Lord…

Anyway……school starts in 3 weeks and we both will be having an extended vacation….. Fall baseball starting… Swim Team, Band and of course Soccer!

fingers that speak!

I really wish that I did not QUIT playing the guitar when I was in middle school because music has the ability to bring life to a lot of dead situations. From elementary school, to middle school to high school, I have played a few instruments but did not stick with none of them and it still bothers me to this day!

That is why I stay on my son via his dedication and hard work with sticking with things that interest him. He has played the drums, the tenor saxophone and the piano and has enjoyed them all. Having the ability to USE YOUR FINGERS to make a sound that can make a person feel better, nod their heads, think about love, pray, sing etc is an amazing thing!!!

Recital

Just got home from my son’s orchestra and band recital and it was so good and I was more elated to go than my son! LOL

Tonight had me really proud and I was very glad to be apart of  YET ANOTHER one of my son’s productive activites!!  It was a very nice program and boy was the auditorium crowded with supportive parents and their families! It was such a beautiful scene! Music  is such a great essential part of kids education that I think that all kids need to put their kids in musical programs.

The kids knew how to read their music, they were dressed so nicely, behaved like little angles, recieved awards and enjoyed themselves!

He plays the drums and the tenor sax and he wants to take a jab at the trumpet now! Hey, whatever he wants to do as long as he can keep his focus and grades up, I am all for it!

Parenting Rule 22,125,00!!!

Music / Band practice yesterday evening…. Ummm.. you would think that this picture is an “”awwee moment”” SO CUTE…. NO!! The Instructor just released all of the Tenor Saxophone section for a few moments and he celebrated!! YIKES…. So embarrassing….

This boy just must get to do too many things because lately he has been becoming bored very quickly…. Is it my fault perhaps??? GEESH..

I advised him because ” I allow ” him to do to many things and he is a tad bit on the spoiled side… You WOULD THINK that if a parent said something like that to their child…the kid would have a come back reply like .. No Mom, I am not spoiled…..

This kid replies back to me and said ..MOM I KNOW THAT I AM SPOILED AND I APPRECIATE YOU SPOILING ME!!!!!!! Okay at that point I could not even get mad or frustrated at HIM …I just kindly looked into the rear view mirror and told MYSELF to stop…. He said mom, who are you talking to? I said myself… He said why are you telling yourself to stop while you are driving? I said mom’s can “multi – task” when thoughts come and starting tomorrow your schedule is changing….

HE CERTAINLY understood that and knew exactly what theat meant because there was SILENCE the rest of the ride home! Look at his “sneaky face ” LOL…
